Elijah McClain’s family to get $15M compensation over 2019 loss after policemen stand

Key takeaways:

  • A 23-year-old Black man died in the Colorado area after police officers arrested him on the way.
  • Elijah McClain died days after he was held by three policemen and infused with a potent drug in Aurora, Colo., in August 2019.

$15M settlement given to the family:

The Denver area of Aurora has admitted giving $15 million the US to resolve a prosecution brought by the parents of Elijah McClain, a Black man who died after suburban Denver policemen arrested him on the street and put him in a throat hold two years ago, the city and a family lawyer have stated.

A judge allowed terms of the agreement Friday, told Qusair Mohamedbhai, a solicitor for McClain’s mom, Shereen McClain.

The claim asserted the police’s brutal execution of McClain amounted to ache and was part of a pattern of racially swayed policing that has included attack and brutality toward Black people. Paramedics also inoculated him with strong medicine.

The prosecution claimed excessive force

The regional prosecutor refused to register charges toward the three officers who defied McClain, partially because an examination could not decide precisely how he died. However, a great panel charged the police and two paramedics in September following an inquiry by Attorney General Phil Weiser organised by Gov. Jared Polis.

“No amount of money can replace what occurred or erase the pain and heartbreak experienced by the family over his loss,” Aurora City Manager Jim Twombly announced in a press release Friday. “This failure has considerably replaced and become Aurora.” Source –
