Vancouver police say they are scrutinizing after the Gastown Steam Clock was sabotaged overnight Saturday.
Photos shared on social media Saturday show the glass on one flank of the clock had been broken, police said. They are working to resolve if someone damaged the clock knowingly.
A forensics unit was in Gastown Sunday to gather evidence, and investigators questioned the area for witnesses and security footage, police stated. In a report, the City of Vancouver said staff ensures the area around the well-known tourist magnet and estimates the damage to determine the following steps. The city said it would make more data available in the days ahead.
The clock was constructed in 1977 as part of the city’s effort to restore the historic downtown neighborhood.
