The fire broke out inside the facility at the corner of Victoria Drive and East Hastings Street just after 10:30 p.m.

“Teams came to find the structure completely consumed, with flames coming out of the window onto the front road,” said Brad Hesse, assistant chief of operations with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS).

Hesse said about 50 firefighters extinguished 90 percent of the blaze by midnight.

No damages or missing people were reported, Hesse said.

Photos taken after the fire broke out showed the shop almost reduced to its foundation. Witnesses lined Hastings Street as first responders resisted the fire, which sent a plume of black smoke through areas of the city.

“The fire deterioration is contained to the structure itself. But surrounding buildings have sustained some smoke and heat damage,” Hesse stated. “Units did a fantastic job getting water on it … but unfortunately, the building was already quite involved, so challenging to save much over there.”

Eyewitness Mary Ho stated she “could feel the warmth from across the alley” near the shop.
