Truck crash with Cambie Road overpass in Richmond shuts Highway 99 lanes

The southbound roads of Highway 99 in Richmond and the Cambie Road overpass have been shut for several hours Wednesday afternoon after a truck driver hit the overpass.

The driver appears to have smashed the overpass with the load on their trailer, which also fell backward onto a pickup truck, hitting its front end and windshield. It’s not clear what the car was transporting.

According to Richmond RCMP, Cpl. Ian Henderson, the closure was anticipated to last well into the evening.

“The engineers need to take a good reliable look at the overpass and ensure it’s secure for everyone,” said Henderson. He said the happening had caused a lot of congestion on nearby lanes, including Knight Street and Highway 91.

“We were lucky that no one was injured in the incident, although there appear to be reported, after the fact, that a worker in the site may have been hurt during the cleanup operation.”

B.C. Emergency Health Services proved that one person was transported to the hospital, but no further details were available.
